How to find a page’s meta tags
Updated 2026-10-22T00:00:00.000Z
Quick answer
Meta tags are in the head of the HTML. Open the page on viewhtmlonline and look at the Report tab, which lists them all with tips.
Meta tags sit in the <head> of a page. The most useful ones:
<title>Shown in tabs and search results</title>
<meta name="description" content="The snippet in search results">
<link rel="canonical" href="https://example.com/page">
<meta name="robots" content="index, follow">
<meta property="og:title" content="Title when shared">
<meta property="og:description" content="Text when shared">
<meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/share.png">
The quick way
Open the page on viewhtmlonline and switch to the Report tab. It lists the title, description, canonical, robots, language and headings, shows a share preview, and points out what is missing or too long.
Checking by hand
Open the Code tab and type meta in the Find box. Every line with a meta tag lights up. Click a line number to get a link straight to that line.
Common problems
- No description: search engines make one up from the page text.
- No og:image: shared links appear without a picture.
- Wrong canonical: search engines may show a different address than you want.
- noindex in robots: the page won’t appear in search results.
Questions people ask
How long should a meta description be?
Aim for about 70 to 160 characters, so search results can show a full sentence.
What size should an og:image be?
1200 × 630 pixels works well for WhatsApp, Slack, X and LinkedIn.
